FLASK 2010
 2010
will be no exception so, weather permitting, the date & time will be Saturday
2nd January 2010, 10:30 a.m. at Ladybank. This
year we plan to go again with 3 clubs and a putter over 9 holes, a fun
size morning. Charlie
Kenney, the surprising winner of this event over the last three years, last year
with typical modesty claimed that all he had to do to retain the trophy was to
turn up – how right he was. To avoid the unpleasantness a further retention
would cause we are hopeful of seeing a reasonable turnout this year. In the
interests of modesty (Charlie’s) I urge you to please come along. I
look forward to seeing everyone then but in the meantime I offer
 to
you and yours. 18/12/09   PRIZEGIVINGThe 2009 Prizegiving Dance was held in Auchtermuchty Bowling Club. Captain Sandy Green welcomed a large company of members and guests who enjoyed a lovely buffet provided and served by Scott Hospitality (Milnathort) which was followed by the Prizegiving and dancing to Spectra. Prize-winners for 2009 were
 19/11/09 CAPTAIN'S
DAY Captain Sandy Green's Day began with the traditional "passing of the Port", which as everyone knows goes to the left (port-side) without the bottle touching the table - it did and it didn't as there wasn't a table. Normally the alcohol would also be in a decanter, however, given that at 8am on the day the clocks changed the golfing fraternity were standing outside the Ladybank Professional's Shop, maybe it was a wee bit fanciful to expect a decanter, the port was well received for all that. A break in play at the 10th tee gave the Captain the opportunity to provide yet more alcohol, tonic and even ice pieces for the gin but, sadly his memory failed him and the pieces of lemon were stranded at home in the fridge. After all this it was hardly surprising that only one of the participants (there was golf on too) hit the 10th green where there was a Nearest the Hole prize, deservedly won by Doug McGilvray. The overall competition was convincingly won (by 0.4 strokes) by the McDevitt/Powrie/Catto team with a creditable 55.7 strokes. Further prizes were won by those teams having 2s and the day concluded with a presentation to President Jack Suttie who turned up for the prizegiving. Jack was presented with a small decanter inscribed Jack's Birthday which was topical as Jack celebrated his birthday the previous day. He is 94 years young. Another good day. 25/10/09 STRATHMIGLO
TAVERN MATCH The annual match against the Strathmiglo Tavern Society, played for the Demperston Trophy, resulted in a win for Auchtermuchty. A fine October morning saw 6 matches, 2 of which were lost but, as the games were played on a Holes Up basis to ensure everyone enjoyed a full 18 holes, the actual result was a 7 hole victory. 11/10/09 2009
INVITATION GREENSOMESThe
Auchtermuchty Golfing Society held their 2009 Invitation Greensomes Competition
over the beautifully prepared Ladybank course on Sunday 30th August.
As the Captain was holidaying and the Vice-Captain featured in the prize list it
fell to former Captain Dave Balfour to welcome the company and make the
presentations. 30/8/09
 The
prizewinners were: 1st
Forbes Catto & Fred Groves
79        (13)
66 2nd
Martin McDevitt & Mark McDevitt
74        (7½)                66½ 3rd Bill Suttie & Stuart Lindsay 85 (15) 70 2009 OUTINGThe Society held their 2009 Outing at the Strathmore Golf
Centre near Alyth on Friday 5th June. Captain Sandy Green welcomed
the party of twenty one members and guests on a day which was beautiful and
sunny in the early morning. The afternoon weather deteriorated to frequent heavy showers, some of
hail, which encouraged one or two to return to the safety of the clubhouse.
There were a couple of notable scores, namely Graeme Drummond’s 73 in the
morning and Doug McGilvray’s excellent 71 shot in the worst of the afternoon
weather. Prize-winners on the day were:
 Other
prize-winners were: Dave Balfour, Bill
Brooksbank, Forbes Catto, George Cook, Philip Gatherer, Brian Imrie, Charlie
Kenney, John Kerr, Andy McGilvray, Neil Powrie & Bill Suttie. George Cook was awarded the
much-coveted Yellow Jersey. Auchtermuchty
Golf Course I recently had a query from a lady seeking information on a long-dead relative. The gentleman in question, her great uncle, James Low (1871-1943) was a keen golfer and a founder member (and honorary secretary) of the original Auchtermuchty Golf Club. Among the papers of her grandmother (sister of James) she found the attached article which she thought might be of interest to your Society. Unfortunately there is no date on it but her grandmother's scrapbook was put together before her marriage in 1906 so we imagine it was published sometime in the early 1900's. The original copy is on one long sheet but there two separate scans which I've made into a file Previous Years/Historical/old muchty golf course.pdf. If you anyone has any
information about her great uncle - or, even better, a photograph - please route
it through me and I'll pass it on.   All she knows is that he worked
as a manager in the linen factory, was married to Kate Ford - they had no
children - and lived at The Cross in the High Street, Auchtermuchty.  She
presumes they are both buried in Auchtermuchty.   Thanks. 28/5/2009 New
Season Auchtermuchty
Golfing Society opened their 2009 season on 5th April with the April
Medal. The large turnout of 16 members was welcomed by new Captain Sandy Green
who introduced new member Dougie Wilson. Prize-winners on the day were Andy
McGilvray with a net 75, John Kerr 78 (better inward half), Dougie Wilson 78. 5/4/2009 On
the same day Bill Brooksbank was made an Honorary Member of the Society. Captain
Green said that Bill had been a member since 1977, Captain for four years and
Secretary for five. He highlighted several of the trophies won by Bill in his
years of membership and said that Bill was intending to take more of a back seat
to allow younger people into the Society. He paid a warm tribute to Bill and the
work he had done over the years. In reply Mr. Brooksbank made reference to the
make up of the club in its early days and said it bore little comparison to the
current iteration. He quoted many of the older members and their idiosyncrasies,
and concluded by wishing the Society well in years to come. 5/4/2009
 Website The
Society website showed a massive 60% increase in traffic over 2007 - 8528 hits
as opposed to 5295 - amply justifying the 2003 decision to move from
Newsletters. For anyone interested I've attached a graph  showing the
spread. If
anyone has any sensible suggestions on
how to improve the site please let me know and I will try to implement them. 17/3/2009 A. G. M. To
summarise the AGM for those who were sleeping or missed it altogether:
 Marjorie Powrie Marjorie
died in her
sleep
this morning. Neil asked that I let everyone know. Marjorie Powrie was a good
friend to the Society over many years and will be missed. Funeral arrangements
will be updated when known. 14/2/2009 Ladybank Pictures I
am indebted to Mr. John Stark for the information that the photographs described
below were taken by ex-Ladybank Captain Lindsay Logan in 1961 and not the 1950s
as previously advised. 27/1/2009 2009 A.G.M. The
2009 AGM will be held in:

 Hope
to see you there. 21/1/2009
BILL ARNOLD Former Society member Bill Arnold passed away
suddenly on Sunday January 4th. Bill joined the Society in 1985 and was a member
until 1999 when he resigned his Ladybank membership. As yet I have no details of
funeral arrangements but will publish them on as they become known. 6/1/2009 BALFOUR FLASK 2009 To everyone's
surprise we were allowed on the course on January 2nd and even though this fun 3 club + putter
competition had to be played on winter tees and greens (and mats) it was good
just to be out there. Charlie Kenney, of whom more later, was a worthy winner of
the trophy, scoring a gross 40, net 32½, and the first ever to hold the
trophy over three successive years, with Martin McDevitt & Gordon Currie
second equal on net 34. A company of 10 souls turned out and enjoyed some good
golf. There was some controversy over Mr. Kenney's score, he now being on the
Ladybank "Deferred List" but we know he would have paid for his
morning's golf so we won't hold that against him. Suffice it to say that if he
doesn't record some cards during the 2009 Auchtermuchty Season his handicap (and
you heard it here first) for the 2010 Balfour Flask will be 4½. Happy New Year!

2/1/2009 Ladybank in the 1950s I have been sent some colour
pictures of Ladybank as it looked in the 1950s when it was still a 9-hole layout
and I have put them on our site as I'm sure everyone will have some interest.
The pictures are quite intriguing and the holes are identified by the numbers as
we know them now. There is a serious absence of broom and not nearly as many
trees as we are used to seeing. To view the pictures follow this link Ladybank in the 1950s.htm
.9/12/008 Stroke Indicator As is my way when I've not a
lot to do I have calculated the Society version of the Stroke Indicator. This is
always a wee bit interesting and this year is no different. Naturally this is an
academic exercise for the Society but now that Ladybank have access to several
years worth of their own competition data, as our Society has for the last 15
years, this may well lead to a change in the indicators. The only holes where we
have the same indicator as Ladybank are the 4th, 15th & 17th holes. Please follow
this link to see the full version stroke indicator.htm.
